Marsha Barnes '13 - “Bringing Financial Literacy to the People”
"So many people in America worry about their personal finances and have no one to talk to," says Marsha Barnes, founder of the Charlotte-based Finance Bar. Marsha's answer was to found the Finance Bar, a mobile financial planning hub built into a retrofitted school bus, out of which she provides personal financial planning services for individuals, schools, organizations, and corporations. Launched in November 2014, the Finance Bar is already receiving local and national attention from the likes of The Charlotte Observer, NPR "Weekend Edition," and Forbes magazine. "I never thought I'd get that much traction in my first year," she says.
Marsha received her bachelor's in business administration from Montreat College in 2010, and her master's in management and leadership from Montreat in 2013. "Montreat taught me strategy, to think outside the box, to be creative. And having a faith-based education and that background from Montreat helped a ton… it's helped carry me through this entire process. Montreat had a great impact on me and still does to this day."
Jeff Powers '11 – "Rising through the Ranks"
Like many working adults, work transitions and travel obligations forced Jeff Powers to put his education on hold. But Jeff gained experience in the corporate world, and eventually began working for Fortune 500 company Thermo-Fisher Scientific. With this move, his desire to continue his education returned. “I knew that the only way I would be considered for next level opportunities would be to have a degree," Jeff says. "Originally, my motivation for returning was just for that piece of paper. However, after beginning at Montreat, I found myself walking away each night with a new thoughts, ideas, tools and data points that were directly beneficial to a challenge I was working through in the workplace."
Jeff received his bachelor's degree in management from Montreat in 2011 and, during his time of study, was promoted to vice president of global operations at Thermo-Fisher Scientific. He is currently pursuing a master’s degree in management and leadership from Montreat’s School of Adult and Graduate Studies.
